Belize Educational Tour
Join IZE as we explore the diverse ecosystems of the barrier reef and tropical rainforest in Belize.

Day 1: Travel to Blue Creek
After arriving at the Goldson International Airport, your group will board a chartered bus for the ride to IZE's Blue Creek Rainforest Preserve. Along the way, you'll pass banana plantations with harvesting. Your bus driver will be happy to stop at a shop to allow you to pick up supplies for a late snack.

Once you arrive in the village of Blue Creek, you will carry your bags and hike approximately 1/3 mile through the jungle to arrive at IZE's Blue Creek Rainforest Lodge (you may hire local Mayans to carry your bags for you for approx. $5 - $10 US per bag). At the lodge you will enjoy a welcome dinner and will sleep in one of the numerous jungle cabins overlooking Blue Creek. (D)

Days 2-4: Explore the Belize rainforest
IZE Belize's Blue Creek Rainforest Lodge is located in the remote, largely unexplored mountains of southern Belize. The site is situated on the banks of a clear, wild, tropical river that is densely populated by many species of freshwater fish.

Several trails and areas accessible from Blue Creek Station allow for observation of hundreds of species of exotic birds and plants, and dozens of species of reptiles, amphibians and mammals. Large, spectacular limestone caves - some with Mayan hieroglyphics - are scattered throughout this area. Nearby agricultural situations (both traditional slash and burn plantations and large-scale rice projects) are available for study.

Your time at Blue Creek will include: rainforest orientation and ethno botany tours; cave exploring; visits to Kekchi and Mayan Indian Villages, and lectures on the present day Maya. Evenings will be spent on night walks to look for nocturnal animals. Time will also be spent snorkeling in the river to observe the many species of fresh water fish, crabs and shrimp. (B, L, D)

Day 5: South Water Caye
After breakfast, your group will hike back down the 1/3 mile trail and board a chartered bus for the ride to Dangriga. The trip will include a visit to Lubaantun (Place of Fallen Stones). There will be time when you get to Dangriga to buy lunch before heading out to South Water Caye.

Once in Dangriga, you'll board a boat and head to South Water Caye. At South Water, your group will stay in our dorm facility. The main lodge contains a male and female bunkroom, dining hall, library, lab, and wrap-around deck. We will try to house group leaders in private cottages according to availability. After settling in and orientation the afternoon will be spent on snorkeling activities. (B, D)

Days 6-9: Caribbean island and reef activities
Your time on the island will be comprised of a number of activities which may include: an island survey and mapping; an exploration of the wrack line and a beachcomber’s scavenger hunt; exploring the abundant grass beds and patch reefs located offshore; studies of marine plankton and encrusting communities; studies of mangrove habitat and the creatures that thrive in that ecosystem.

If approved, a stop will be made at the Smithsonian Research Station on Carrie Bowe Caye. Research scientists from all over the world use this station and will be sharing their expertise. A comparison of South Water Caye and Carrie Bow Caye will also be made. A possible stop at Man’O War Caye will allow close observation of the interaction of the magnificent frigate bird and the brown booby. (B, L, D)

Days 10: Depart for US
After breakfast, you will board a boat for the ride back to Dangriga where you will take a chartered bus ride to Belize International Airport and your flight home. If time permits, (departing flights after 3 pm) the group will stop at the Belize Zoo for a last look at the wildlife of this beautiful country. (B)
