South Water Caye
IZE Belize South Water Caye accomodations are available for groups, families, and individuals and include meals and transfers from Dangrigas Riverside on the mainland to South Water Caye. Guests may choose to stay in our Marine Lodge dormitory or in private cottages.
Island Dining
At IZE Belize, our dining rivals any Belizean restaurant. From poached snapper with mustard sauce to coconut pie, our cooks have achieved the perfect balance of local cuisine and gourmet specialties. Be prepared to sit back and enjoy some of the freshest exotic seasonal fruits, freshly baked breads, and fresh local seafood.
Located in the southern wing of the lodge, our large dining room at South Water Caye provides spectacular views of the Caribbean waters and Maya Mountains. Here you'll find two open air verandahs, a full service bar, gift shopping and internet access.
Marine lodge dorms
The northern wing of the octagon-shaped marine lodge houses IZE Belize's dormitory, divided into two large dorm rooms that can house groups of up to 30.
A second dormitory also features two bunk rooms, showers, and bathroom facilities and can house smaller groups.
Each dorm room features bunk beds, a shower and access to a shared bathroom. Primarily used by schools or other specialty groups, the dormitory has a total capacity of 30 guests and allows groups to experience South Water Caye at a modest cost.
Leslie cottages
IZE Belize's private cottages at South Water Caye are nestled in the mangroves on the eastern shoreline of the island to take advantage of the cooling trade winds. They are so close to the water's edge that you can awaken to a view of the barrier reef and the sound of waves gently lapping the shore beneath you.
Our private cottages feature secluded decks, electric fans, and private bathrooms with hot water showers, making them perfect for group leaders, families, singles, couples and honeymooners.
Marine biology field station
Located in the center of IZE Belize's South Water Caye marine biology research station and lodge is the marine biology lab. This unique facility has a scientific library, wet tables, TV/VCR, chalkboards, microscopes, display specimens, basic scientific equiptment, and a slide projector with a vast collection of slides.
All IZE Belize visitors are welcome to spend time in the lab, whether to look up that new fish they saw while diving, watch a video featuring the reef system of Belize, or to watch a lecture or slideshow. We encourage all our visitors to enrich their knowledge of Belize and its diverse inhabitants.
IZE staff at South Water Caye
South Water Caye is co-managed by Jennifer McDougall (Jen) and John McDougall (Mac). Jen takes care of the logistical support for all IZE operations in Belize, and Mac is in charge of overseeing the staff and the physical operations at the South Water Caye site.
Jen has been the the program director for IZE Belize at South Water Caye since 1994. A native of Ohio, Jen has a BA in Biology from Bluffton College, Ohio and a MAT in Biology from Bowling Green State University, Ohio. Jen is now a permanent resident of Belize, living at South Water Caye. Most likely Jen will be the first person you meet when you step off the boat.
Mac has been working with IZE Belize since 1991 and has built almost all of our facilities at both Blue Creek and South Water Caye. He is an accomplished electrician, plumber, carpenter, and mechanic.
Mac is always ready with a smile and eager to chat with the guests about life on South Water Caye. He has a knack for helping IZE guests feel right at home and part of our Belizean family.
